The LaTanya Black Alumni Mentoring Scholarship (LBAMS) is a Mentorship program that believes in the “Power of Partnerships” and has built the mentoring scholarship on the foundation of the African-American proverb, "Each One Teach One."

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS (CHWs) ARE:

  • Trusted, knowledgeable front line health professionals who typically come from the communities they serve 

  • Bridge cultural and linguistic barriers

  • Expand access to coverage and care and improve health outcomes

  • Are critical links between their communities and the health care system

  • Reduce health disparities; boost health care quality, cultural competence, and affordability

  • Empower individuals and communities for better health

LBAMS PROVIDES:

  • CHW Peer-to-peer mentorship

  • Support from professional CHW mentors who share real-world work experiences

  • Mentor skills, knowledge, experience, and practical help to each mentee

  • Aid in student retention by providing leadership guidance

  • Professional CHW mentors who have completed the MN Community Health Worker Alliance (MNCHWA) Leadership Development Program

CHW PARTNERSHIPS HELP MENTEES:

Many of the mentors are SAOIC Alumni’s and understand first-hand the challenges and expectations of CHW employers. LBAMS believes this approach can be extremely beneficial for the success of the CHW mentees achieving their career goal(s).
